72 Hoorain (Hindi: ७२ हूरें, romanized: Bahattar Hoorain) is an Indian crime film directed by Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan and was released on 7 July 2023. The movie generated significant controversy due to its depiction of inaccurate information and its potential to perpetuate Islamophobia.[1][2] The movie was first premiered at 2019 International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and won ICFT-UNESCO GANDHI MEDAL Special Mention. Director Chauhan earned National Film Award for Best Direction for 72 Hoorain in 2021.[3] It was said to be released in English and 10 other Indian languages – Assamese, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.[4][5] Official trailer was set to release on 28 June 2023 and it was reported on the same day that Central Board of Film Certification did not grant the censor certificate for its trailer even though the movie is certified.[6] CBFC refuted such misleading reports and clarified it as under due process. The film follows two fidayeens (suicide bombers), Hakim and Bilal, who are killed in a bomb blast in Mumbai.[5][9] They find themselves in a limbo-like state, waiting to enter heaven. They are told that they will be rewarded with 72 Hoorain , known as the “Hoorain”.[6][10] However, as they wait, they begin to have doubts about the existence of the Hoorain and the afterlife. They also start to question the reasons why they were recruited into terrorism.
