Mitin Mashi who runs a Kolkata Police detective agency is summoned by an eminent Parsi businessman to look into his son’s kidnapping. Mitin must solve the case in time. Mitin Mashi is a 2019 Indian Bengali detective film directed by Arindam Sil, produced by Rupa Datta and presented by Camellia Production Pvt. Ltd. The film starring Koel Mallick and Vinay Pathak, is based on the Hate Matro Tintey Din, a story by the novelist Suchitra Bhattacharya. Mullick portrays the fictional detective character, Mitin Masi, created by Bhattacharya. The film was released on 2 October 2019. Suchitra Bhattacharya created detective fictions about Mitin mainly for teenagers, although wrote some stories of Mitin for adults.[1] The real name of Mitin Masi is Pragyaparamita Mukherjee. She is in her mid 30s, lives in Dhakuria, Kolkata with her husband, Partha and son, Bumbum, and likes to cook. Mitin works as a private detective, who likes to use her mind rather than her revolver. She has a detective agency called the Third Eye. Oindrilla, popularly known as Tupur, is her niece. Tupur is a school student who assists her in many of her cases. Suchitra Bhattacharya writes many of the stories with a background of travelling to different places in India, and along with her mysteries, she also inculcates some knowledge of the culture of a particular place in her stories. Mitin’s sister Saheli and her husband Aboni, Tupur’s parents, are present in many of her adventures.
Mitin Mashi is a simple, engaging and well-executed film. It has beautiful coupling of tabla beats and private investigator Pragya Paromita aka Mitin’s fight sequences. From the first such fight scene to the time when the end credits roll, every frame in the film is unpretentious and detailed without any forced treatment.
Koel is mature in her portrayal of the central character. From looking fit to appearing relatable, she pulls of one of her career best roles with élan. Every thriller needs an interesting breaking point and this film is no different. Though the second half is exciting, it is much stylised. But in keeping with the modern times and references of WhatsApp aiding Mitin mashi’s investigation, the stylisation don’t look out of place.
Subhrajit Dutta, who plays Koel’s on-screen husband, looks the part and enacts the scenes equally well. Whether it’s his screen presence or Koel’s ability to get under the skin of the character well, they look every bit the childless but happy married couple. Riya Banik, who plays Koel’s neice, Tupur, also fits in well. She plays out her age and innocence well while assisting her aunt. From the very first scene that introduces Vinay Pathak as Koel’s on-screen client, he becomes the Parsi gentleman he plays. Given the actor’s calibre, he could have been given a longer screen time. June Malia supports him well.
